Harrisonburg – Casting call for two student short films – March 2024 – Unpaid

First Film:

“The Forest’s Edge”

Director: Nyah Jana

Logline: An impromptu hike to rekindle an old romance turns sinister when Matt and Sarah face unseen dangers in a forest that’s harbored rumors of dark secrets.

Special Notes:
1) We invite individuals of all ages, experiences, abilities, ethnic backgrounds, gender expressions, and sexualities to audition.
2) This film will be in the horror genre. It should be noted that this short horror film may include the use of fake violence, fake gore, fake weapons, etc.
3) Most of this production will take place outside in the mountains; no hiking experience is necessary, but you must be physically able to work on a set in a mountainous area.

Matt (18-25): An athletic, 20-something year old, male whose ego is bigger than his heart, over-confidently takes on the challenge of the wilderness. His manipulative efforts to pursue Sarah during a horrific event are telling of his character.
Sarah (18-25): Sarah is the sweet, yet snarky, college student at the top of her class, who couldn’t be more opposite from Matt. She navigates life with grace, allowing those around her to trust easily building genuine connections. Her free-spirited energy contrasts Matt’s cockiness throughout the hike.
Detective (25-40): The backbone of this small-town. walks around with his head held high between his shoulder. He is the epitome of law enforcement, crooked and all. Since he knows his status in the force, he has no problem living a double life intertwined in the dark secrets of the forest. Being a key figure in this investigation allows him to mask all connections to the cult, putting on a respectful, helpful, and friendly façade.

Non-Union student short film shooting mid-to-late March in the Harrisonburg area. No compensation for travel/housing provided. Unpaid, but Food + IMDB Credit + Access to the Film for Reels + a Professional Screening of the Film in May at the Grafton-Stovall Theater is provided.

Second Film:

“Angel Dreams”

Director: Declan Leach

Logline: After a tragic loss strikes their community, longtime friends Aaron and Brigid are torn apart by disagreement. Through their conversations and the strange visions of dreams, they grapple with the question: ‘how can you mourn someone you never knew?’

Aaron (18-25): is no-nonsense and practical, but not uncaring, evidenced by his long friendship with his best friend, Brigid. Aaron tends to be very positivist in his belief about the world and people, thinking that anything can be explained by logical proof. This has a great bearing on how he walks through life, and certainly how he approaches the tragedy that begins the trajectory of the story of “Angel Dreams”.

Brigid (18-25): is deeply empathetic yet often guarded; feeling things so deeply that she hesitates to share those feelings, for fear that they will overwhelm those near to her. Though nearly the opposite to Aaron, they’ve maintained a long and reliable friendship for years, and she can feel comfortable in his presence. That same deep empathy and belief in the interconnectedness of life guides Brigid’s life, and of course how she deals with the tragedy that incites the events of “Angel Dreams”.

Sarah (18-25): was a quiet and kind girl, close to a friend of Brigid’s while at college and not much to anyone else. She kept to herself and yet in her passing, rocked much of the community around her by its suddenness. In Aaron’s dream she appears more like a vision; a vessel with a message for him to deepen his understanding of empathy for others.

Special Note: We invite individuals of all ethnic backgrounds, gender expressions, sexualities, and abilities to audition.
