Richmond – Casting call for student short film – April 2024 – Defferred

Hi! My name is Tamia Booker and I am VCUarts 2nd year Cinema major. The idea behind this project is to bring awareness to how black students who choose to major in an arts field major in college are often looked down upon due to the fear of the lack of making a successful living. I want to be the inspiration for younger artsy black kids to major in art field majors in college :).

CASTING:
Maxwell
Maxwell is a high school senior who wants to major in art with hopes of being a full-time painter, but his parents look down on this idea and think he should major in something more lucrative.

Personality:
He is shy, funny, quiet unless he feels comfortable, artistic, and nerdy. He struggles with speaking up for himself, especially with people who have authority.

Maxwell’s Parents – Maxine & Jamie
They understand that Maxwell is an artist but want him to choose a more “stable” career choice without giving him the ability to prove himself. His parents often talk down to him, belittling his dreams.

Personality:
Maxine:
The more understanding parent. She wants to see Maxwell succeed. She’s funny, quirky, outspoken, and struggles to let people help her. She hangs Maxwell’s paintings on the walls. (nurse practitioner)

Maxwell’s Grandma – Grandma Jam
Jamie’s Mom, but also Maxwell’s biggest fan. She always comforts him or puts money towards his art career and comes to his defense against his unsupportive dad.

Personality:
Nice, Funny, young spirited but wise. She had a successful career as an optometrist. She spends a lot her later life going to art galleries and exhibitions, and noticed the lack of diversity. Hence her wanting Maxwell to follow his dreams.
Akiera – Maxwell’s Best friend
Maxwell’s best friend since they both joined art class in ninth grade. She has always been around for him, and is constantly telling him that he should do what makes him happy and pursue art.

Personality:
Opposite of Maxwell. Loud and Outspoken to everyone. She also has a art background and has dreams of majoring in graphic design in college. She is also kind of rebellious and loves to stick it to the man.
