Carl Hendrix – Black, 35-45
As a young boy, he saw the worst that life had to offer. He believed his future was one of two options: prison or death. It’s no wonder he developed a crippling addiction while still a teen. The strength that he summoned to beat back these demons was rooted in his determination to prove that he would not be like his father. With a stubborn will, Carl pressed on and beat the odds.
As an adult, he arrived at a place in life where he was filled with gratitude and hope. The optimism he felt was deeply rooted in being a proud father. He was dedicated to protecting his son and carefully navigating him through many of the same challenges he faced.
In what seemed to be a random act of violence, his aspiration for a bright future is snatched away. He gives in to hopelessness and falls backward into the life he overcame. But his despair quickly turns to rage when he discovers his loss wasn’t random at all. With the same stubborn will he used to make a better life for himself, Carl sets out on a dangerous path of revenge, with absolutely no thought of turning back.
June Hendrix – Black, 35-45
She knows how dangerous life can be for little black boys. She’s seen the anguish in so many of their eyes. With the love-filled determination that only a mother can give, she raises her son with the understanding of what he would be facing. Tender, but stern, she established a bond with her son that was built on preparing him for a bright future. Even when he strayed off the right path, she knew what to say and do to steer him back. She instilled a trust that always let him know he was safe with her.
Beautiful and vibrant. That was the way people described her. That was before the loss. Her lively, enthusiastic, and positive nature died the moment her little black boy was taken. Consumed by grief, she sinks to a place no mother ever wants to visit. As the details emerge around why her son was taken, June sees an opportunity to not only honor his memory, but to also forge a new bond with a little black boy who needs someone just like her.
Cecil Hendrix – Black, 50-70
Living to tell the tale of being responsible for destroying an entire community is a heavy burden. She feels that burden in ways that he can’t express. Not that anyone would care to feel his pain. After a life dealing drugs, death, and violence, Cecil settled into an existence of seclusion far away from the scenes of his crimes. Through the innocence and curiosity of his grandson, Cecil is given the gift of unconditional acceptance and forgiveness. He finds a way to redefine his legacy by mentoring the youngest and most promising in his family.
His brief time of peace in his old age comes to a violent end. His source of pride and forgiveness unexpectedly leaves this world before he does. Using his “talents” and penchant for violence, he easily and gladly slips back into his role of gangster. Fueled by a determination to “go out” while doing something for his family, Cecil methodically calculates what he plans to be his final act.
