Richmond and Mechanicsville – Casting call for student short film – April 2026 – Paid

New Surge Productions is looking for Asian-American principal and supporting actors for HOW TO LIVE IN LIVING ROOMS. Vietnamese proficiency is required for some roles, while preferred for others. This is an independent, student, non-union film.

PAY: $150/day with meals provided

“Feeling like a failure, an aimless art student decides to go back home to his parents, but in the midst of finding himself, he is forced to learn how to talk in the living room he grew up in.”

ROLES:

Ocean (4 days, vietnamese male, 18-25, proficiency preferred)
– An awkward and troubled young painter, he feels constantly at odds with his parents because of their cultural disparities, along with language barriers that keep him from speaking at all.

Kim (3 days, vietnamese female, 40-65, proficiency required*)
– Ocean’s mother, who lives for her children, concretely caring, righteous, protective, stubborn, and a carrier of nail salon stories – the head of the family.

Hannah (4 days, asian female, 18-25, proficiency not required)
– Ocean’s childhood best friend, who uses humor and wits to cover up her own personal struggles- hard-working and down-to-earth.

Bo (2 days, vietnamese male, 40-65, proficiency required*)
– Ocean’s quiet father who stays out of it, while cooking and supporting the family financially – caring in a foreign language

Joy (1 day, asian female, 40-65, proficiency not required)
– Hannah’s mom, a quiet supporter of Ocean and Hannah, with ambiguity and mystery behind her solemn eyes

Peter (1 day, asian male, 40-75, proficiency not required)
– Hannah’s father who doesn’t speak much, instead opting to read the weekly newspaper.
