We are a fantastic creative team committed to making Charlottesville a better place for all our citizens! Light House Studio equips young people with the skills and confidence to tell their stories and build community through filmmaking. Located on Charlottesville’s bustling downtown mall in the historic Vinegar Hill Theatre, our staff is making a big difference for young people in our city. Watch one of our students’ award-winning movies or come to a screening of a unique independent film, and you are likely to leave feeling informed, inspired, and connected. Light House Studio also owns and operates the historic Vinegar Hill Theatre located on Charlottesville’s downtown mall. While LH’s education programs are focused on serving youth ages 8-18, our VHT Community Programs serve people of all ages and backgrounds. In 2025, LH welcomed 6,594 attendees across 89 VHT screenings, rentals, and Summer Film Academy (SFA) screenings.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Creative Director will serve as a Lead Teaching Artist for workshops at Light House Studio and in the community for our partner programs. They will work on various film projects and lead the coordination, filming, and editing process. They will help manage projection/tech for select VHT screenings/events.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Programs
- Curriculum Content & Production Work: Work with the Executive Director and Programs team to develop and enhance programs/workshops offered at Light House; lead partnership/community programs and the filming and editing process for assigned projects
- Teaching Artist: Serve as a Lead Teaching Artist for Light House original workshops and partnership collaborations; oversee students in the storytelling, production, and post-production process; ensure students rotate roles throughout production; place emphasis on collective decision-making among students; assist Program Director with recruiting new seasonal Teaching Artists and ensure effective selection, training, and support; prepare workshops with other Teaching Artists; manage and evaluate Teaching Artist performance
- Equipment Maintenance: Ensure equipment is maintained and repaired as needed; assist with equipment preparation prior to workshops; work with Operations Director on annual equipment disposals
Vinegar Hill Theatre
- Projection and Tech: Assist with projection and Tech for Vinegar Hill Theatre screenings and events. Projection and tech responsibilities include, but are not limited to: obtain and test media file(s) including sound levels and video playback; confirm equipment is set up for discussion and/or Q&A, if applicable; ensure equipment and media file are functioning properly in advance of the screening/event; managing screening and technical equipment during event; confirm follow up items, if needed
- Front of House: Serve as backup for managing Front of House (FOH) for Vinegar Hill Theatre screenings and events, as requested
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES
- 5+ years’ professional experience in video/film production, including specialization in one or more of the following (documentary, animation, or narrative filmmaking)
- Has a well-developed knowledge of film, film history & theory, cinema fundamentals, filmmakers, film trends, and film vocabulary. A desire to research, plan, develop, and execute innovative film screenings, some with guest speakers/panelists, that captivate and educate audiences.
- Holds a relevant Bachelor of Fine Arts or Master of Fine Arts degree (film/video or related field)
- Teaching experience is preferred and/or a desire to teach
- Experienced operator of professional sound, video, and lighting equipment
- Proficiency with industry standard software including FCPX and Premiere (After Effects preferred)
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Strong organizational skills & ability to work on multiple, diverse projects to meet deadlines
- Energetic with an ability to work independently and without close or constant supervision
SALARY RANGE AND BENEFITS
Light House employees are given ten (10) working days to be used for PTO and five (5) working days to be used for sick days. Full-time employees are eligible to enroll in group medical insurance. Salary range is $60,000-$70,000/per year to commensurate with experience.
