VIRGINIA FILM OFFICE UNVEILS NEW WEBSITE If you haven’t visited the Virginia Film Office’s new website recently, now’s the time! This new site is full of useful information about filming in Virginia, up-to-date news on the online hotline and a special section just for Virginians. Do you think your property would be perfect for a film or commercial? One unique feature of the site is that anyone can submit digital photographs of their property for inclusion in the Film Office location library. Check it out here: www.film.virgina.org. 2007 VIRGINIA SCREENWRITING COMPETITION The 2007 Virginia Screenwriting Competition (formerly known as the Governor's Screenwriting Competition) is accepting screenplays from April 16th through May 27th. There is no entry fee for this competition, open to Virginia residents only. Participants will receive a written evaluation of their work and the three winners of the competition will receive a prize of $1000 each. More information and the application can be found here. BYRD THEATRE FUNDRAISER The Byrd Theatre Foundation is proud to announce their upcoming production of Just a Closer Walk with Patsy Cline starring Julie Johnson as Patsy and Steve Barcus as Radio DJ Little Big Man. The Byrd Theatre will host the fully staged theatrical production featuring five local musicians who will portray Ms. Cline's on-stage band. Proceeds will be used for a desperately needed new roof and continual preservation of the theatre to restore it to it's 1928 glory. Audiences will take a trip back to the late 50's and early 60's as the musical unveils the life, times and music of Patsy Cline, easily the finest female voice to ever grace the country music scene. Performances will be held Friday, May 18th at 8p.m., Saturday the 19th at 2 & 8p.m., and Sunday the 20th at p.m. Tickets are $37 with group discounts available and can be purchased at The Byrd Theatre and Plan 9 in Carytown. HOW TRUE ARE TRUE STORIES IN THE MOVIES? On June 7, the Virginia Screenwriters' Forum and the Virginia Production Alliance will present a truly unique event, How True are True Stories in the Movies? The special guest will be Richmond creative writing teacher, Mary Jane Tolley, whose husband was killed in the plane crash that was the centerpiece of the recent film We Are Marshall, starring Matthew McConaughey,. Mary Jane will discuss her experiences working with Warner Bros. with an emphasis on how and why true stories and characters were changed for the film. Helene Wagner, Director of the Virginia Screenwriters' Forum will narrate and entertainment attorney, Bennett Fidlow will be on hand to answer legal questions. Cost: $5.00 - includes light refreshments. (Free for members of the VPA and Virginia Screenwriters’ Forum.) Time: 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Location: Art Works, 320 Hull Street, Richmond. MARION VIRGINIA FEATURED ON SUNDANCE CHANNEL The Town of Marion, Virginia will be featured in an award-winning documentary that will have its U.S. television debut on July 4 on the Sundance Channel as part of its Independence Day celebration. The film Independent America: The Two Lane Search for Mom & Pop follows former NBC News journalists Hanson Hosein and his wife, Heather Hughes as they travel 13 thousand miles through 32 states in search of Independent America. BLACK FILM FESTIVAL AT ATTUCKS THEATRE IN NORFOLK Bringing together 24 black films from coast to coast, the Mid-Atlantic Black Film Festival (MABFF) will take place over three days from July 26 – 28, 2007, offering the best in black and multi-cultural independent films, powerful narratives, compelling historical and contemporary documentaries, innovative films by students, colorful animation shorts, music videos and discussions with distinguished guests from the film industry. Documentaries and short films may be submitted to be considered as part of the Festival until June 2. www.attuckstheatre.org. 48 HOUR FILM PROJECT IN RICHMOND AND VA BEACH Two Virginia cities have been chosen to host the 48-hour film project, an internationally known independent film competition and festival. As part of the project, local groups are formed and are given two days to turn in a short film based on a pre-determined subject. The films are screened, and the winning film is sent to the international competition. Teams are forming soon, and the number of teams is limited. BEAST OF BURDEN STATE OF THE INDUSTRY Live and work in Northern Virginia? On June 13 from 5:00 p.m.—8:00 p.m., the Virginia Film Office will host the first State of the Industry meeting in this area. It’s a party, a chance to meet people and an opportunity to learn about Virginia’s film & television industry.
