Virginia Emerging Filmmakers Festival announced by The Film Studio at Shenandoah University and Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Winchester, VA

A STUDENT FILM FESTIVAL

Fees: Earlybird by March 1st: $3.00  Standard by March 31st:  $5.00

A new film festival for current high school and college students will take place April 12 – 14, 2019 at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Winchester, VA.  The Virginia Emerging Filmmakers Festival will be presented by The Film Studio at Shenandoah University, and will be open to student filmmakers from across the country.

Guests will have a chance to watch presentations from filmmakers and educators, as well as watch student shorts in the categories of drama/comedy, documentary, horror, and music video.  Selected filmmakers will compete for over $1,500 in prizes.  Interested filmmakers can apply on FilmFreeway (https://filmfreeway.com/VirginiaEmergingFilmmakersFestival) by March 31, 2019.

Films will be judged by a diverse group of industry professionals with ties to Shenandoah University and the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, including:

Mike Elliott – A partner in the production/distribution company Capital Arts, Mr. Elliott has been a producer on over 150 film and TV projects including the AMERICAN PIE and BRING IT ON series and the Rob Zombie films THE DEVIL’S REJECTS, HALLOWEEN II, and the upcoming 3 FROM HELL.

Don Argott – A leading documentarian, Mr. Agrott is the filmmaker behind such critically-acclaimed documentaries as LAST DAYS HERE, BATMAN & BILL, and AS THE PALACES BURN.

Dr. Susan Kehoe –   Dr. Kehoe is Director of Educational Media Services at George Mason University and the Senior Executive Producer at GMU-TV. She serves on the board of directors of the Communications Media Management Association and has been inducted into the International Academy of Visual Arts.

Rodman Flender – Mr. Flender is a director and producer known for extensive film and TV work.  He has directed episodes of such popular TV series as UGLY BETTY, THE OFFICE, PARTY OF FIVE, and GILMORE GIRLS.

Efren Ramirez – Efren is an actor and producer best known for his role as “Pedro” in the surprise-hit film NAPOLEON DYNAMITE.  Efren has also been featured in films such as MIDDLE SCHOOL: THE WORST YEARS OF MY LIFE, CRANK, and EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH and has had recurring roles on the TV shows NAPOLEON DYNAMITE and EASTBOUND & DOWN.

Rebekah McKendry – A Winchester, VA native, Mrs. McKendry is currently a Media Production Professor at the University of Southern California.  She is also an accomplished director and producer, and has worked as a writer for Fangoria and an Editor-In-Chief for Blumhouse.

Will Stockwell – A remarkable talent, Will has spent significant time on the road filming various musical groups, including EAGLES OF DEATH METAL and AWOLNATION.  Will was also a cinematographer on the sports-TV series MADDEN NATION.

Steve Nerangis – Steve is the owner of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema.  He is also a partner with Varla Dogwood Films where he co-directed the top-Billboard selling documentary CAN’T STOP THE SHOW: THE RETURN OF KIX.

Nick Nerangis – An SU graduate an award-winning actor, Mr. Nerangis has worked on various film and TV projects including SPENT, FOR REAL, and SANTA GIRL.

Manny Vasquez — Graduating at the top of his class from Shenandoah University, Manny is one of the best documentarians in the Tri-State and DC area, having filmed the Award Winning documentary film, “A Mother’s Will.”

Faye Guerra – Faye is the host and curator of PSYCHO CINEMA, a group of 1,000 plus film fans that meet weekly at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Winchester, VA

“Our Festival is specifically designed for high school and college student filmmakers.  We have very purposely downsized the submission fee to attract students,” said SU professor Paul DiFranco.  “So LIGHTS! ACTION! CAMERA!  SUBMIT YOUR FILM!”

THE FILM PROGRAM AT SHENANDOAH offers the student a unique opportunity to make films in conjunction with professionals in the film industry.  With Capital Arts Entertainment as its production partner, films are designed and made FOR THE MARKETPLACE.
