Washington DC – ISO: Graphic Designer – Paid

As a Graphic Designer, you would be part of a mid-sized creative team supporting the Department of Homeland Security, Science and Technology Directorate (S&T). The candidate would be working with clients and other designers to conceptualize and execute a variety of compelling visual designs to promote technology programs and visionary goals. The team supports customers who are first responders, cyber security experts, urban planners, bio-defense scientists, and others in the homeland security enterprise.

Primary Responsibilities Include:
·  Developing original layouts for printed materials, including business / web cards, postcards, one-pagers,
posters, trifolds, brochures, booklets, reports, and other printed media
·  Developing original layouts for digital static media, including social media graphics / infographics, web
banners / buttons, and email headers / footers
·  Taking text / image content and formatting it to fit within existing templates
·  Developing process diagrams that explain complex processes in an intuitive way
·  Developing illustrations that convey a wide range of concepts (from the literal to the abstract) in a memorable and persuasive way
·  Providing static assets for videos and interactive products developed by other members of OCC’s staff
·  Developing and contributing to the development of logos to represent various groups and programs within S&T
·  Developing and contributing to the development of branding for various events / campaigns / outreach efforts
·  Providing feedback on existing designs and articulating areas for improvement

Necessary Skills Include:
·  Expert skills in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator
·  Versatility with other products in the Adobe Suite (more specifically, Premiere Pro and After Effects) are a plus
·  Versatility with the limited design aspects of the Microsoft Office Suite (mostly Word and
PowerPoint) is required
·  Versatility with the limited design aspects of Adobe Acrobat are a plus.
·  The ability to create original illustrations / vector assets (icons, symbols, logos, branding elements, charts, graphs) from scratch is required
·  Familiarity with 3D modeling software is a huge plus
·  Have a strong design point of view and understanding of fundamental design principles,
typography, layout, grid systems, hierarchy, color and composition
·  The ability to imitate as well as “refresh” existing designs / layouts is a plus
·  Ability to take creative direction and work independently, as well as collaboratively, in a fast paced team environment
·  Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, from concept to completion, exhibiting flexibility and the ability to create multiple creative concepts with speed
·  A strong team player that’s positive, innovative and able to collaborate with a team of other designers and creative thinkers
·  The ability to clearly articulate complex design concepts in “layman’s terms” to clients through written, verbal and visual communications
·  An understanding of current design trends is a big plus, as is past experience in the freelance or private sectors

Experience Requirements Include:
* At least a Bachelor’s degree
* Plus at least 2 years of relevant experience
* If candidate does not have a Bachelor’s degree, he/she must have at least 6 years of relevant graphic design experience
* Candidate must be able to provide a portfolio of current and past design work in order to be considered for the position

This position is full-time with benefits, and is a mix of working off-site from home and on-site at the client’s offices in downtown Washington, D.C.
