Richmond – World Premiere of “America Rising: The Arts of the Gilded Age” – Jan. 20 – Fee

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts presents the World Premiere of

America Rising: The Arts of the Gilded Age

Fri January 20 | 6:30–9:00 pm

VMFA is proud to sponsor the world premiere of another exquisite documentary film by writer/director Michael Maglaras and executive producer Terri Templeton from 217 Films in Connecticut. This will be a triumphant return for the team who’s Enough to Live On: Arts of the W.P.A. played here to great popular acclaim in 2015.

This compelling, historic “essay in film” covers “America’s Renaissance,” the tremendous outpouring of artistic endeavor that occurred between the death of Abraham Lincoln in 1865 and the death of Mark Twain in 1910. More than 90 high definition examples of art are shown. Among these are John Singer Sargent, Childe Hassam, Winslow Homer, Alfred Stieglitz, and Augustus Saint-Gaudens AND seven works from VMFA’s permanent collections.  Plus, the recently discovered, only known film footage of Twain taken in 1909.  The film also recognizes the 100th anniversary of our country’s entry into World War I.
