J-Film: The Kingdom of Dreams and Madnes

The JICC and the Japan Commerce Association of Washington, D.C. Present

– The J-Film Series –

The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness | May 18, 2016 | Wednesday at 6:30PM

Dir. by Mami Sunada | 2013 | 118 min | Japanese w. English subtitles | Unrated

“Riveting and revealing!” – The Hollywood Reporter

“Four stars! A work of immense beauty!” – Daily News

“Heartfelt and moving!” – The Guardian

Granted near-unfettered access to the notoriously insular Studio Ghibli, director Mami Sunada follows the three men who are the lifeblood of Ghibli – the eminent director Hayao Miyazaki, the producer Toshio Suzuki, and the elusive and influential “other director” Isao Takahata – over the course of a year as the studio rushes to complete two films, Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises and Takahata’s The Tale of The Princess Kaguya.

The result is a rare “fly on the wall” glimpse of the inner workings of one of the world’s most celebrated animation studios, and an insight into the dreams, passion and singular dedication of these remarkable creators.

Women in Cinema

Director, Editor, and Cinematographer Mami Sunada

Born in 1978, Mami Sunada studied documentary film-making while at Keio University before apprenticing as a director’s assistant under Hirokazu Kore-eda and others. Her directorial debut, Death of a Japanese Salesman (2011), a documentary about her father’s last days after being diagnosed with cancer, garnered numerous first-time director awards. The film’s revenue also surpassed 100 million yen at the box office, exceptional for a documentary. The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness (2013) is her latest film.
