They are looking for capable people who are willing to help out and have fun while forging new relationships and networking within the RVA film scene. The positions are unpaid, but meals will be provided.

Plot:

JOSH IS LOOKING FOR BOTH BACKGROUND ACTORS AND LEAD ACTORS FOR THE FOLLOWING ROLES:
JACK GRAYSON – 23-30 – Handsome but somewhat rugged. Cold, distant personality. He seems to live his life without a true purpose, floating along from one place to another without much driving motivation. When he acquires the disc, he develops a fascination with it that tends to overpower his general, hazy apathy. LEAD.
PAUL MORIARTY – 35-55 – Shady and mysterious. Withholding and hard to trust. Moriarty knows a little about the disc and has spent a large portion of his life searching for the object in order to use it. He knows Jack has the disc, and spends a lot of time trying to coax it away from Jack. LEAD.
SARAH DANE – 20-30 – Flighty. Usually in a good mood. Optimistic. She is interested in Jack and spends lots of her time setting up dates with him. Jack never refuses, but Sarah gets frustrated with how unreadable he can be. LEAD.
A SINISTER MAN – 30-50 – Pale and creepy. Unsettlingly cold. The sinister man haunts Jack and tries a few times to take the disc by force. Spiteful and cynical, the sinister man holds all the answers, but will never part with any of them. LEAD.
YOUNG GIRL – 8-12 – Naïve and innocent. The young girl is the one to give Jack the disc at the start of the film. She is quiet and shy, but is motivated to give Jack the object that she is convinced he lost.
Additional roles exist, but are unlisted. They correspond directly with the above ages/motivations.

Docs In Progress returns to Washington DC next Thursday, May 17 for a work-in-progress screening. Did you know that this month marks the NINTH year of bringing work-in-progress screenings to DC Metro area and they will be doing so in partnership with The Documentary Center at the George Washington University, their longest running sponsor.

WHAT’S A DOCS IN PROGRESS SCREENING ANYWAY?
Docs In Progress screenings provides an opportunity for local and visiting documentary filmmakers to screen their unfinished films to an audience and get valuable feedback. After screening the film, facilitators from Docs In Progress moderate a feedback session with the audience. This honest and constructive feedback is aimed at helping the filmmakers get to the next stage of completing and distributing the film.

There’s a film festival that can help filmmakers in your communities as well as local nonprofits and the folks they serve.
Lights. Camera. Help. has opened its call for entries for its 4th annual film festival. Lights. Camera. Help. shows PSAs, short films and feature length films dedicated to a cause on the big screen for audiences for love film and love giving back.
After the festival, money is awarded to the nonprofits featured in or designated as beneficiary for the film. They’ve awarded money to a girls school in Kenya, an arts program helping the homeless get on their feet in Texas, an organization dedicated to clean water for Appalachian coal mining towns and others.
Please spread the word among the filmmakers in your community that if they’ve produced anything for a cause, there is not entry free for this festival for early submissions.

Blue Cat Screenplay Workshop in DC

Gordy Hoffman, the Sundance award-winning writer/director (LOVE LIZA, A COAT OF SNOW) and founder of the Blue Cat Screenplay, will lead a screenwriting workshop.

THE FULL SCRIPT WORKSHOP
Participants read seven screenplays in advance of the workshop. Screenplays can be first drafts or rewrites, with first time writers and veterans all welcome. During the workshop, Gordy provides direct and in-depth feedback on each screenplay, with everyone encouraged to contribute his or her own thoughts and concerns.
Each writer will leave with great sense of what they can do specifically to improve their screenplay, as well a better awareness of where they might properly develop as a professional screenwriter as a whole. Not only do you learn from the focus placed on your screenplay by the workshop, but also by the examination of the six other scripts of the day.
Gordy will provide brief written notes to each writer after the workshop.

THE 2012 VIRGINIA SCREENWRITING COMPETITION
APPLICATION IS AVAILABLE ONLINE!

The 2012 Virginia Screenwriting Competition presented by the Virginia Film Office is open to Virginia residents and students attending Virginia schools, and there is no entry fee to submit a screenplay.
Every screenplay in the competition will receive a written critique from the first panel of judges and screenplays selected as finalists in the competition are judged by industry professionals actively producing feature films.
The deadline to enter is Friday, May 25, 2012.
All entries must be postmarked on or before that date.

This course is geared to the screenwriter, producer, film director, novelist, or playwright to help convert their material into screenplay and face the difficult task of having to choose what will, or will not work. Movies discussed during class whose writers successfully faced this difficult task include Titanic, We Are Marshall, The Untouchables, The Queen, Seabiscuit and others. Students will learn by example how the nature of film drama is intrinsically different from the from source materials and how the intrinsic drama of film must remain in order to bring the compelling true story, or other adaptation to the screen.

STORYLINE – Precocious 12-year-old Louisa Mae Cardinal and her younger brother Oz must go to live on their great-grandmother’s farm in Virginia. Lou finds herself coming of age in a new landscape, makes her first true friend, and experiences a struggle played out in a Virginia courtroom that will determine her future and the future of her entire family.
This feature film will be under the SAG-AFTRA Low Budget film agreement. This is a preliminary regional search for the following 3 roles only.

LOU CARDINAL – 12-14, Caucasian. Pretty and feisty. A tomboy. She wants to be a writer like her father whom she greatly admires. Lou is overwhelmed when her father is killed and her mother is left catatonic in a car accident. She is apprehensive about her move to the south, but is also curious to learn more about the family her father never talked about – especially her great-grandmother. LEAD

OZ CARDINAL – 9-11, Caucasian. Lou’s younger brother. Quiet. He is sometimes dismissed by his older sister for being seemingly naïve, but still looks up to her. Ever hopeful, Oz has a positive view of the world, and brings much needed humor to his sister’s struggle. LEAD

DIAMOND SKINNER- 10-14, Caucasian. A skinny, mischievous “mountain boy” with an authentic southern accent. He develops a close friendship with Lou and Oz. He takes pride in showing off his mountain and its countryside…especially to Lou. LEAD
