Steven Spielberg to Film Lincoln in Virginia

RICHMOND – Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell today announced Academy Award-winning filmmaker Steven Spielberg will shoot his highly anticipated major feature film Lincoln in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The film is based on the book “Team of Rivals” by Doris Kearns Goodwin and will be shot in the Richmond and Petersburg areas. Filming will begin in the Fall and the movie is slated for release in 2012.

Clint Eastwood Film Shoots in Virginia

RICHMOND – Governor Bob McDonnell today announced that the towns of Warrenton and The Plains in Fauquier County, Great Falls in Fairfax County and the cities of Alexandria and Arlington were recently used in a major feature film with the working title of J. Edgar. The film examines the life and legacy of F.B.I. Director J. Edgar Hoover and is directed by Clint Eastwood – who was last in Virginia shooting a scene for his film Flags of Our Fathers at the Iwo Jima Memorial. J. Edgar is being produced for Warner Bros. Pictures by Imagine Entertainment and Malpaso Productions.

Richmond in Top Ten Cities for Filmmakers

RICHMOND – Richmond, Virginia has been named as one of the ten best cities in the country to “live, work and make movies” by MovieMaker Magazine, one of the country’s premier publications for filmmakers. This much-anticipated list of best cities for filmmakers has been published since 2000 and marks the second time that Richmond has received this honor. The first time was in 2003.

Fourth Annual Virginia Indie Film Festival

RICHMOND,Va. – The Virginia Film Office and the Virginia Production Alliance cooperatively presented the fourth annual Virginia Indie Film Festival February 26 and 27 at the Byrd theatre in Richmond. The Festival featured independently produced documentaries, short films and feature films from Virginia filmmakers. The winning entries in each category were announced at the Festival.

Virginia Film Office Director Rita McClenny Wins Pollak Award for Excellence in the Arts

RICHMOND – Rita D. McClenny, Director of the Virginia Film Office and Vice President for Film and Operations for pthe Virginia Tourism Corporation, has received the prestigious 2010 Theresa Pollak Award for Excellence in the Arts. Given yearly, the award honors those who, through their dedication, vision and talent, have made a significant impact on the arts in Virginia. McClenny is this year’s recipient in the area of film.

Sony Pictures Television Movie “Unanswered Prayers” To Film in Virginia

RICHMOND – The Virginia Film Office announced today that Woodridge Productions, Inc., a subsidiary of Sony Pictures Television, will film Unanswered Prayers, a made for television event movie. Unanswered Prayers is based on the popular Garth Brooks song of the same name. It debuted at #1 on the Billboard and R&R charts. Lifetime Television has cast Samantha Mathis (The American President) and Eric Close (Without a Trace) in the lead roles. The movie will begin filming in September, and will air in late November of this year. Following the release, Unanswered Prayers, will be distributed widely on DVD in the United States and overseas.

Governor Signs Virginia’s First Film Industry Tax Credit Legislation

RICHMOND – Governor Bob McDonnell today ceremonially signed into law Virginia’s first-ever tax credit legislation for the motion picture industry. He officially signed two bills: SB257, sponsored by Senator Louise Lucas (D-Portsmouth); and HB861, sponsored by Delegate Ben Cline (R-Lexington). Designed to recruit the production of television, film, documentaries and interactive digital media to Virginia, this legislation was part of the Governor’s successful Jobs and Opportunity” economic development agenda which received broad bipartisan support during the past session of the General Assembly. Governor McDonnell also highlighted a budget amendment he requested during the 2010 session which increases funding to the Governor’s Motion Picture Opportunity Fund from $200,000 to $2 million for FY 2011. Virginia Film Office Wins Major Marketing Awards at L.A. Trade Event

RICHMOND – The Virginia Film Office was honored May 5th with four marketing awards in a competition sponsored by the Association of Film Commissioners International (AFCI), the premiere association for film commissions from throughout the world. The awards were presented at Locations Trade Show, an annual trade event that has been held in Los Angeles for the past twenty-five years. Virginia’s awards were second only to Ausfilm, the film commission representing Australia, which won five.

Winners of the 2010 Virginia Independent Film Festival Announced

RICHMOND,VA – The winners of the third annual Virginia Independent Film Festival, sponsored by the Virginia Film Office, were announced Sunday, February 28th at the Byrd Theatre in Richmond. The festival was created to support and showcase Virginia independent filmmaking, which includes but is not limited to short films, features, documentaries and content for new media outlets. A juried panel selected three feature films, three documentaries and six short films to screen at the festival from over seventy submitted entries. From these twelve films, a second panel of jurors selected one grand prize winner in each category and those winners were announced at the festival. One audience choice award winner in each category was also selected by ballot during the festival.

Virginia Independent Film Festival February 28th

RICHMOND, VA —The Virginia Film Office and the Virginia Production Alliance are cooperatively producing the third annual Virginia Independent Film Festival on Sunday, February 28 from 1:00 pm – 10:00 pm. The Festival features the finalist films from the Virginia Independent Film Competition, conducted by the Virginia Film Office. Finalists come from throughout the state including films from Alexandria, Bristow, Fairfax, Charlottesville, Richmond, Roanoke and Virginia Beach.

Winners of the 2009 Virginia Independent Film Competition and Festival Are Announced

RICHMOND, VA —The winners of the 2009 Virginia Independent Film Competition were announced at the Byrd Theatre in Richmond on Sunday, April 26, 2009. As part of the competition, documentaries, short films and feature films by Virginia filmmakers were submitted and evaluated by a panel of judges. The finalists were shown at a daylong film festival where the winners were announced in each of the categories. Winners were: documentary – The Flyingest Flying, directed by Josh Criss (Arlington); short film – Concept of Beauty, directed by Benny Oliveri and Martin Montgomery (Midlothian) and feature film – In the Pines, directed by Chip Johnson (Hampton).
